Relationships build 25 years of memories
It’s been said that “memory is the diary that we all carry about with us.”
If so, then you might say that Debbie Mills is on her 25th internal volume of her Arkansas Baptist Children’s Homes’ diary.
“Debbie
is our resident memory,” said Randy Luper, Baptist Home director. “If
you need to know what was done on campus more than 20 years ago, Debbie
will know it.”
Mills, Baptist Home business director, celebrated her 25th anniversary at the Monticello campus December 15. She is the longest tenured employee currently at the Baptist Home.Mills has served as business director since 1996. She was the office manager from 1986 to 1996.
In her current role, Mills is responsible for the comprehensive business management of the Monticello campus. She directs and coordinates all areas related to administration, business management, personnel, and maintenance of buildings, grounds and equipment.
In addition, Mills can frequently be found loving on ABCHomes kids and making memories.
When asked what she most liked about her job,
Mills said, “There isn’t just one thing, its everything. And it evolves
into what has kept me here for this long: relationships.”
In a span
of 15 minutes, 25 years ago, Mills said her life was changed forever.
Noting that she had applied for several jobs in Monticello, Mills said,
“On the same day two employers called me within 15 minutes. The Baptist
Home was the first call.” She jumped at the ABCHomes ministry
opportunity.
“In looking for a job, I found a family and a ministry that’s unique to all others. Twenty-five years of relationships with co-workers and kids who have been here, are here and will be here cannot compare with anything the world has to offer.”
Luper praised Mills’ long-time service. “It has been my sincere honor and pleasure to have worked alongside Debbie these past years. She is an individual of integrity and professionalism,” he said. “Debbie is my right-hand person.
“I could not perform my job as well as I do without her.”
Prior to her service at ABCHomes, Mills served as editor of the Lincoln Ledger in Star City until the paper shut down in 1986.
A native of Longview, Texas, Mills grew up in Kingsland. She and her husband, David have one adult son, Adam.
They are active members of Second Baptist Church
of Monticello. She serves on the stewardship and finance committee and
David is a deacon.
